Whipped Shea Body Butter

Whipped Shea Body Butter

My Silk Kimono body butter is one of my favorite products, and certainly one of the favorites of my customers. Its silky smoothe texture glides onto the skin and soaks right in. The butter is made of whipped shea and coconut oils, with just a touch of vitamin E to protect the oils. I generally use only 100% natural, pure essential oils to scent my products and generally shy away from fragrance oils unless I am sure that they are pthalate free. I also feel that it’s better to use a product that has some aromatherpeutic value, a characteristic that is completely lacking in synthetic fragrances. We all know that there is just no comparison between natural essential oils such as lavender and their fragrance oil versions.

So, here’s my dilemna. My customers and retailers are clammoring for new scents for this whipped shea body butter, currently only available in the signature Silk Kimono scent. What other scents would you like to see? I’d love to take a poll from my readers and get some feedback about the kinds of blends that would make you want to indulge in the wonders of whipped shea! What do you think?

How about jasmine or geranium? I might even go for patchouli, though I know the haters are many.

    • lilithsapothecary says:

Jasmine is a wonderful option but the pure absolute is really expensive. I have to try to save that for solid perfumes or perfume oils. Rose geranium or a kind of Geranium Citrus or Lavender Geranium (i.e. more ‘citrus’ or more ‘herby’)? Thanks for your thoughts!

  2. Beckita says:

    Hmm…
I think you should give some options – like can you do cowslip scent? (the best wildflower in all of the world – found here in france)

I don’t know – how about something beachy for summer?

    • lilithsapothecary says:

Beckita! Well, no, i’ve never heard of a cowslip essential oil. I could research it though. I try to stick to the pure essential oils, so my options are more limited than if I went down the fragrance oil road. I might be able to do something with vanilla absolute, though it’s also expensive (like jasmine absolute).
Beachy…such as something citrusy (though there is the sun sensitization issue)? Or something cooling, like Rosemary Mint? This is fun!

  3. Christina says:

You have some sultry and sexy… why not the opposite, something really fresh and light and breezy? Maybe something with sweet orange and a touch of rosemary to ground it and stuff like that. I’d personally love to try both. xD

    • lilithsapothecary says:

Christina, I think that is a Great idea! I love using orange to give a bright feeling to an otherwise herby or even woodsy scent. Thank you for your thoughts! Email me at lilithsapothecary@gmail.com and when I come up with the new scent, I’ll send you a sample 😉

  4. katie says:

i love the scented geranium idea…the attar of roses geraniums i had in my garden last summer were practically intoxicating.

i like the lighter summer idea, too…something lemongrassy, sandalwoody?

    whee!

    • lilithsapothecary says:

Well, this is what I did guys…a new “Vanilla Sands” scent (a bit more complex than straight vanilla) and it includes essential oils and vanilla fragrance oil from a good source. The second new butter is called “Herb Walk” and includes such lovelies as Lavender, Rosemary and a few other herbaceous scents using all 100% pure e.o.’s. Both are really yums!
Katie, I hope you like that lemongrass cedarwood lotion bar sample ~~ were you thinking of a body butter along those lines?

  5. Kimberly says:

I love sandalwood but mostly during the cooler months. In the warmer months I love citrus so if orange or lemon aren’t highly requested how about verbena grounded with a smidgeon of cedar, sandalwood or cypres?

    • lilithsapothecary says:

Kimberly, I like how you’ve considered the scents that are appealing different times of year. I love sandalwood too – unfortunately the essential oil is outrageously expensive, so i generally only use tiny amounts or similar e.o.s… and verbena is unfortunately not usually available as an e.o..But both are available as fragrance oils…it’s just a matter of finding an f.o. that I *know* is pthalate free. Of course, you also don’t get any true aromatherapeutic affects from f.o.s, but sometimes you just want that yummy smell! I love your suggestion, though…and my mother-in-law specially requested for a body polish with lemon verbena, so I think it’s time for some experimenting!

UPDATE! My two newest versions are 1) “vanilla mystere”; a vanilla f.o. based scent (i gave in!) with some other deeper, sensual notes. The overwelming impression is of warm, very true vanilla with some subtle complexity that even makes this scent suitable for a perfume oil; and 2) Fairie Glen: a light, herby garden scent that has a fresh, light scent made entirely of essential oils. Lavender and rosemary both feature, among others. It’s a delightful garden walk.

I can’t wait to try your products! I am a big fan of coconut and tropical scents for the summer if that’s doable for you 🙂

  7. Bekenef says:

I know this is too late, but if you ever make another… I love mint and other fresh e.o.s in the summer (euc, maybe?). I don’t know what else with it, but a twist or something beyond the standard mint would be nice. 🙂

    • lilithsapothecary says:

It’s never too late to get feedback from great customers & readers! I actually LOVE rosemary mint as a combination and you know, I think this would be a wonderful foot balm, accompanied perhaps by a foot soak. What do you think? I could package them together as a foot care package. I find that I need that kind of thing more in the summer when I’m barefoot or in sandals and roasting hot in my city neighborhood! Do check out my new “Fairie Glen” scent for a lovely, light herbaceous scent.

      • lilithsapothecary says:

Michelle, I generally don’t do fragrance oils, but coconut can be so deliciously irresistable that I might have to bend the rules a bit 😉 Thanks so much for your thoughts!

      • Bekenef says:

I just noticed the Forest Mint lotion and it sounds great (maybe I missed that before?). It is perhaps time for an order… 🙂

      • lilithsapothecary says:

Yes, that’s brand new and certainly inspired by your feedback. I used to offer a rosemary mint hand cream that is quite lovely, and I may bring that back as well 😉

  8. cajunmade says:

    ROSES!ROSES!
Ilove the smell of Roses. A nice clean strong scent would be sooo wonderful.
    thanks

    • lilithsapothecary says:

Thank you for your thoughts! I do use rose absolute quite a bit, as it is a most intoxicating scent…rose and white peach facial mist, nourishing rose facial elixir, rose & aloe toner….I’ll take your vote for rose to heart 😉
